WARNING to Boat sellers!
Boat sellers should be aware of a new cashier-check-scam by people posing as "interested buyers." They pay with a phoney cashiers check made out for an amount larger than the purchase price, and ask you to send the balance back to them or to some phoney shipping agency "to pay for the shipping."
It looks like the check cleared because US Bank regulations require funds to be made available to you in one to five days for cashiers' checks, but it takes the bank three weeks or so to find out it's fraudulent. Then the bank won't pay you for the phoney check, you've lost the money you sent back to the seller, and you still have the boat to sell.
Don't get caught by this scam! Details are available at http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/scams/carsale.asp
If you have an H-28 for sale, or wish to buy one, e-mail
me and I will list it here.
If a boat is sold or goes off the market, let
me know so I can update this list.

Hello Theo,
As you know, we are building new spars for our H28 "Bright Star" this winter. The new shop is nearly completed and a new spar bench is being built as I write this. In addition to boat building and spar making, we are a full service boat shop, capable of making all bronze tangs and hardware needed for the H28 or any of L.Francis Herreshoff's other designs. We also make the Tobin Bronze and Lignum Vitae mast head flag staffs, exactly as designed by LFH.

Hi Jay,
This is really great! There is quite a need for these since they are hard to come by, and it's particularly hard to get fittings to a certain specification. Take a look at the notes below and on the Message Board from Lyle Kuhnert, John Dumke, and Allan Easton, who may be in the market for spars or bronze hardware.
Best of Luck,

Please keep us in mind when one of your members needs a trailer. I've attached a photo of one of ours for reference.
At our shop we build trailers that have the load carrying capacity a customer requests ---- then we custom fit them to the vessels they will carry. Typically our prices are less than half the cost of other new trailers.
Building a trailer is a phased project. First we look at a customer's ideas and/or sketches. Then we convey our common areas of agreement, as well as our important areas of disagreement. Only after we both agree on all aspects do we settle down to get it done.
We email our customers work-in-progress photos as the final product takes shape. Then we email a final photo when the trailer is ready to receive their vessel. We enjoy what we do and we stay busy because our past customers send us future customers.
We deliver nationwide. My name is Larry and you can email me or call our shop (405-789-0288) if you want a price.

Hi Theo,
I have an H28 hull my grandfather starting building in 1960. It is mahagony planked with white oak framing. It has silicone bronze fasteners. There are several sails that go with the boat, that came from another H28. The hull and rudder are finished. It needs to be decked and the cabin and cockpit need to be completed as well. I also have the orignal plans (blueprints) and recipts for materials. The hull needs to be sold and moved from its location (Houston, TX) by 12/20/05; the property has been sold.
Here are a some pics (we have more if any one is interested). We really hope to find a good home for this boat.
Thank you for posting this.

Hi,
I am selling "Splinter", a lovely, extended (30'), Far East version of the H28. The boat is in very good condition with only a few small, yet interesting projects left to do. I recently repowered with a fresh water cooled Volvo MD11d. Sadly, I now have more children than bunks, and I must move to a larger boat. I have attached some photos. The boat is in San Diego and I am asking $19900.

Hi,
I have just purchased Theo Wolfshagen's H-28, Varuna and we have successfully transported her from Montreal to her new home in Westport, Ct. After a weekend of rigging and house cleaning we made a short maiden voyage from Norwalk up to the mooring. The sail was delightful and I was very impressed with her ease through the water. Theo has done a beautiful job maintaining this 55 year old classic and I feel honored that he passed the baton to our family. It was through your web site that we found Varuna - Thanks for being there!
Let the sailing begin. Let the restoration begin. While we'll be sailing through the fall and getting to know Varuna's idiosyncrasies, I'd like to be pooling resources for restoration - sails, masts, rigging, best way to store her etc. I'm sure your knowledge and experience will be very helpful when brought to bear on her behalf. We would appreciate any resources or direction you could provide to guide us on our way.
I look forward to hearing from and will continue to refer to you site for insight.
Best regards, John

I have a 1963 H-28 built by Far East. I have all manuals and even the orriginal descriptive flyer about the boat. It is in decent shape but could use a little work. I would like to sell it as I want a slightly bigger boat to set sail around the world in. I am really not sure of the value of the H-28 can you give me any assistance on how I could find out? I can send you pictures if that helps. Thank you for your help.

------------------------------- Reply --------------------------------
Hi Fiona,
Most of the H-28s offered for sale that I have heard about have been asking between $7,000 and $20,000. Those are for boats in good working condition. I don't know for what prices any of them have actually sold for. The biggest variable is usually her condition and the amount of work needed to make her (1) seaworthy and (2) beautiful.
Some are offered for $20,000 - $35,000, and are usually in beautiful condition. Others are asking around $1,500, and most of these need rebuilding before they can be launched. Our own "Lark" was in the middle category, and we have spent again as much to put her in great condition.
Photos would help immensely! If you send any I will post them.
Good Luck,
Theo

Selling because of illness. Honduran on iroko, new boat covers and sail covers, sails in good condition, sound vessel. Sailed extensively in the Northwest and offshore (several years ago). I have owned her for 12 years and broke my back and cannot keep her up. She needs bright work and has beautiful custom refit done by a shipwright in the interior and beautiful hatches. I have a single banger volvo penta which runs well. Two new Gel cells, hauled July 2004.
She is in the San Francisco Bay area. I am asking $7,000 for her and she is well worth it.
Please feel free to call and I will give more specifics and pictures.

------------------------------- Reply --------------------------------
Hi Lisa,
I don't know much about the market for parts of H-28s. However, when I had Lark's mainmast rebuilt from scratch out of all new materials, it cost about $1200 for the spruce mast and about $1800 for the hardware, rigging, and labor to fit it, totaling about $3,000. Used, for a small market, you might get about half that if they are in very good condition as described below. If the wood spar is not worth much, then their value would be just that of the hardware, minus the labor to remove it and use on a new wood spar. Shipping a 35-foot mast is expensive, also.
To get the best price, the spar should be be in good condition, built with Weldwood glue or epoxy, made of spruce, varnished, and built in north America, especially by Pidgeon or Cooper.
The older casein glue has a shorter lifetime. As it gets older, casein glue begins to fail, then separate, then fresh water gets in and makes a rot spot, sometimes with a tell-tale stain if it reaches the surface. At this point many people stop varnishing the mast and paint it because the dark stain doesn't look good. The problem with that is that you can't tell the condition of the wood if it's painted.
Spars built in North America in the 1960's, especially those built by Pidgeon or Cooper, used Weldwood glue, which lasts longer than casein glue. A reglued spar could be better or worse, depending on how well it was done.
Spruce is lighter and stronger in long lengths, and is much better than fir, which is second best. (Lark's mainmast is made of fir.) The price of spruce has gone way up recently .
It's difficult for an amateur to determine the condition of a spar. The best way is to have the spars surveyed by a experienced wooden boat surveyor and have him put a fair value on them.
Regards,
Theo

Theo, I have an H 28 in dry storage that has no engine but complete rigging, a gorgeous mahogany hull and dearly needs to be brought back. The former owner replaced a few ribs and has the hull ready to be caulked. It does have a plywood housing that I think should be taken back to the original. It is stored on a steel form that could be moved to any adequate trailer for transporting. I only have $1500 in it and would sell it for that.

Hello Theo,
We met a few years ago when I sailed Fairwind up the bay from Jamestown to see Lark. It was the eve of your halloween party at Edgewood Yacht Club.
I have subsequently moved to Jamestown and have made the decision to move on to another boat. We had an awsesome monthlong crusie to Penobscot Bay in Fairwind a few years back & the family is outgrowing her.
Fairwind is a Far East 29.
Well equipped and in 'good' condition, which means she sails every year, has a lot of projects done and gleaming, and a few in the offing.
She has 'still crisp' 2 yr old Banks Main and Mizzen, several old genoas, a working jib, storm jib, spinnaker and mizzen staysail.
Power is a reliable Faryman 11 hp single cylinder diesel w/ 3 blade prop (1/2 gal / hr @ 6 kt)
There are recently new cushions in the cabin, bunk boards to create a double sleeping area.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for writing! It's a shame we didn't get our boats together again while you had her. We've had a hard time getting out with our young daughter, but we had our first overnight with her last summer. We also cruised for a month to Penobscot Bay in Maine eleven years ago. We'll put your ad on the website. Photos would be especially helpful.
Best of luck,
Theo

Subj: Sails and hardware for sale

From: Pennnnguin_at_aol.com

Hello My name is Ron Tyrrell and I have some items that I would like to find a home for. Back in 1975 I bought an unfinished H28 and after having it surveyed and trucked to my home in Gig Harbor Wash. we found a major flaw in the costruction of the hull and it would not have been cost effective to finish the boat. So thirty years have gone by and I have all of this new H28 rigging, blocks ,fasteners, and last but not least a brand new set of Shattuer sails still in the bags. There is main, mizzen, and jib, these sails were only recently taken from the bags to be measured and check for damage and there is none. I can provide pictures and measurements if needed and I would to find them a good home. I paid about three thousand for them in 1975 and have no idea what they are worth so I am open to offers. Shattuer still has a loft in Seattle although Franz died some years back but the sons are still in business. My adress is pennnnguin_at_aol.com or Ron Tyrrell 1184 N.E. Sunrise Lane Hillsboro Or 97124. My phone number is 503 681 0319
Thank You Ron
-------------------------- Reply ---------------------------
Hi Ron,
Thanks for writing. I've placed your letter in the For-Sale page. Please note that many different boatyards built H-28s, many slightly different, especially the rig. For this reason, measurements of your sails would probably be necessary before someone would purchase them. It's easy enough to make small changes in either spars or sails to accomodate each other, providing you're aware of the need before you start.
I would like more information on the assortment of hardware, particularly one or more photos of the items. I might be interested in a few items, too, and there might be someone who is building or outfitting an H-28 who might be interested in buying the whole lot.
Thanks,
Theo

Subj: H 28 hull for sale
Date: 1/2/2003 2:00:44 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: janb_at_janmurray.com (Jan Murray)
To: THAschman_at_aol.com
Hello!
I am a Sydney-sider with the hull, masts, rigging, sails (everything but a cabin) of a beautiful H28 called "Search". Her sail number is H2. She is the second one built. My shipwright partner and I rescued her from a shipyard closed down by a greedy developer. However, we cannot afford to carry out the restoration now as our own (Lyle Hess 30ft) boat requires work.
This is a fire sale! Would your association have Australian links I might use to publish the availability of the H 28 "Search"?
regards,
JAN MURRAY

Subj: Jin Lung for sale
Date: 11/14/2000 7:30:44 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: DKMacKenzie_at_compuserve.com (Daniel A. MacKenzie)
Due to the increased size in our family, we have decided to
sell our vintage H-28 which is featured on the
Stories page.
Information:
I own a vintage 1960 H-28 built and certified to the exact specs of the
original plans from Herreshoff. I have copies of the original
correspondence from the shipyard to the first owner prior to the boat being
built and and owners maintenance history. The "Jin Lung" (Original name was
BriteStar) is a collectors item and was built in the Gallart shipyard in
Barcelona Spain. The picture of this exact boat may be seen on page 22 of
"Sensible Cruising Designs" from Herroshoff prior to its completion. It is
in mint condition and emaculate. Her interior has been meticulously
maintained and all new "Sunbrella" canvass has been customized to cover her
exterior as well as her interior elements as necessary brass, head boards, etc.
"Jin Lung" has won twice the Bristol trophy for the best preserved boat in
her class on the west coast (I live in Los Angeles) and has placed 6 times
in coastal yacht races for wooden hulled boats. Unlike most converted
designs she comes with the full 38 cubic feet in the cockpit with more than
ample room for many passengers. The wood has been imported from West Africa
and she is constructed from Acacia, Teak and Mahogany with spruce masts.
Her combings were replaced several years ago from Honduran Mahogany and her
rigging is in perfect condition. All new white external passenger cushions
(interior and exterior) have been made and the colors of the boat are
burgundy and white. It is a showpiece and an excellent sailor!
Her power supply consists of a 3 cylinder- 16 hp Universal diesel which is
extremely reliable. Universal gauges. She has recently gone through a full
service where her oil filtration system has been completely updated,
stuffing box rebuilt and she was hauled two months ago and her entire hull
has now been smoothly sanded and repainted and the keel completely sealed.
The Mizzen mast was also recently removed, sanded to bare wood and
revarnished with ten new coats. The boat comes complete with numerous
accessories including a bimini cover, and the hard to find filler boards
that turn the cabin berths into one large sleeping area, stove, lanterns
etc. I have extra sails and wooden blocks. The boat has three separate
compartments 1) Cabin 2) head and hanging locker and 3) forward berth with
open hatch access. All compartments are consistent with respect to the
interior design. The head and all through holes and valves have all been
recently replaced. It is an exceptional offshore cruising yacht with
interior and exterior class. She is for sale at $34,500 obo and is
presently moored and covered at a private estate in Naples, Long Beach.
There is a picture of her above and on the stories page. This
is an older picture. For more information on this yacht please contact the
owner Dan MacKenzie at (562) 715-4891 or via e-mail at
DKMacKenzie_at_Compuserve.com.
Best Regards,
Dan MacKenzie

Subj: H-28 wanted
Date: 10/20/2000 1:23:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: dwhite_at_jenkintown.org (David W. White)
Dear Webmaster...
I am quite interested in buying a wooden H-28 and would like some possible
sources for the boats. I am not particularly sensitive to condition, but
would like the boat to be 1.) moveable and 2.) restorable. I would not be
averse to one in good condition, either.
I live in the Philadelphia area and sail a Cal 22 on the Chesapeake Bay...
so a boat from somewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region would be quite convenient.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. I should be available at any
of the numbers or e-mail addresses shown below.
Sincerely,
David W. White

I have owned Orion since 1980. She was built this way in 1953 Dead Man's
Cay Bahamas with the 6' headroom extended cabin. We love her very much but
sadly we have less and less time to sail. I never thought I'd sell her but I'll hoist
a flag on the web. "anyone out there interested? Do you want to find out more?"

Subj: H-28 to buy

From: RO Hood rohood_at_aol.com
I am currently searching for an H-28 or H-30 to purchase on the
West coast (I live in L.A.). Do you know where I might find
such an animal? I passed on one of these beauties about four
years ago that was located in Oxnard. I have been kicking myself
ever since. My only requirements are that the hull is sound,
the engine starts or is at least rebuildable, and the rigging is
complete. Any help would be appreciated.

WANTED: boat for sale
Author: "Richard E. Pratt" <prattri_at_cinti.net
Thank you for the responding to my e-mail. My brother and I are
looking for a Herreshoff Ketch for sale of any size.
If it needs work, that's OK too. I would appreciate any leads.

The Providence Journal (of Providence, R.I.)
listed the following classified ad a while back:
"Classic wood H-28 Graymarine IB VHF
depth head sleeps 4 $12,500/best 849-8453"
"IB" probably means inboard, and the phone number is probably
401-849-8453 in Newport, R.I.
If you have an H-28 for sale, or wish to buy one, e-mail
me and I will list it here.
